Gymnastics Photography by Scott Einuis

What defines a package?

Simply put a package consists of a gymnast, a backdrop, a defined number of photos taken, a format of film, and a minimum order.

What is the minimum order?

Each package has a specified minimum dollar value order (which must be met), however each order also must consist of ONE of the following:

  • Three (or more) sheets. A sheet is defined as an 8x10, two 5x7's, four 4x5's or 8 wallet size photos. They can be mixed and matched in any way you please, but they must be ordered in quantities of 3 or more. Also, you must order 3 sheets in order to receive the lower pricing on the 11x14 and 16x20 sizes.
  • A photo larger than 16x20
  • Which package is for me?

Well this may be the toughest choice of all. The recommended format is the 6x4.5 Medium Format. This format allows for quite large enlargements that look very nice in quality. Even the 30x40's look good. If you're not sure what you want, pick one of these. The lab also allows me more cropping options for the best results.

If 6x4.5 is recommended, why have other formats?

Well 35mm is a good format for up to 8x10, and an especially good format if your looking for more pictures to choose from. Most people who pick D and E packages utilize the 35mm format, for they can get instant enlargements done at any place with a machine. It's one of the most popular formats in photography, and I wouldn't want to prevent someone from getting what they want.

I recommend the 6x7 format for large photos only. If you hire me with the intent of a poster, or even something larger than 30x40, the 6x7 format is the choice.

What's the difference between 35mm and Medium Format?

I shoot two different medium formats the larger of the 2 (6 cm x 7 cm negatives) are about 5 times the size of a 35 mm (24 mm x 36 mm) negative. Thus, enlargements are much more crisp. An 8x10 enlargement from a 35mm negative will have less clarity than a 30x40 from a medium format negative. The limitations (in my professional opinion) of the 35mm negative is about 11 x 14 before you start to notice the quality degradation, which is why I limit 35mm enlargement in any package to that size.

The other medium format size I shoot is (6 cm x 4.5 cm negative) is 2.7 times the size of that 35 mm format. This will also provide very crisp enlargements, and gives more photos per package than the larger of the two medium formats. I prefer the larger of the two formats due to image quality, but want to leave the choice up to you.

Of course, medium format film and equipment is much more expensive, hence the cost difference.

Why do the deposits for each package vary?

The amount of film and time to shoot the quantity of negatives requested for the number of proof desired yields more expense.

How do I apply my deposit?

Your inital order form will reflect your deposit. Since your minimum initial order is always equal to your deposit, you may not have any money due at the time of inital ordering. If you decide to order more photos, only the difference between the total order amount and the deposit is due with that order.

What happenes to my deposit if I don't order?

The gym is isntructed to send in all orders by a specified date in one batch. I urge you to get your orders in on or before that date. If you don't have an order in on or before that date, I will provide a package for you that is of the value of your deposit.

    Do I get a receipt?

Yes you will have a written receipt for your deposit amount showing date and payment information. I will have a duplicate of this receipt.

    Is my desposit refundable?

Deposits are only refunded if there is a physical defect in the film which prevents the actual photos from being exposed and processed. Deposits are never refunded for matters involving the photo content. Fees are never refunded for package D or E.

What happens if my check is returned from the bank?

Your photos will be held up until the check is made good by bank check, money order or certified check plus a $15.00 fee.

What is the process for A, B and C packages?

Approximately 2-3 weeks after shooting is finished, the gym will receive a package containing smaller packages with numbered proofs and order forms. These packages will contain all necessary information on how to order photos. The first order is done through the gym. You bring your order form and check to the gym within a specified amount of time, and the gym will mail all orders to me in a batch. Then , some 2-3 weeks later, all photos will arrive in a package again sent to the gym. No shipping charges will apply to the initial order. These packages will also contain re-order forms.

What is a package and who orders it?

A package is defined as the number of proofs and film format chosen, plus an individual gymnast or group of gymnasts which can not change. Moreover, the photo background for a package does not change. Packages can be ordered by gymnasts, parents or the gym. The gym may want group photos and can order a package thereof.

What is the process for re-ordering photos?

By filling out a re-order form (see re-order page), supplying necessary payment and mailing both to the specified address you will the receive photos in 3-4 weeks.

What, if anything, can the gym receive as a bonus?

Depending on the number of gymnasts and packages ordered, the gym may be entitled to either individual shots, team shots, both, and/or other custom work. This is all discussed and finalized prior to the actual shooting.

    Who poses the athletes?

I prefer the athletes either pose themselves, or have another party pose them. As I do have a knowledge of gymnastics, I know how some gymnasts feel about a pose that could show bad form. Hence, I suggest that poses be practiced, decided upon in advance, then monitored by someone who is able to make corrections. We all want these photos to please everyone involved.

    Can packages be combined?

I can combine packages in a shoot, but the format of the film MUST be the same throughout the gym. In other words, I cannot do an A-35 package and a B-67 package in one shooting. I can however, do an A-645 and a C-645 in one session. The ONLY excpetion here is when D or E packages are ordered. However, I must know in advance as to how many packages of each package type are desired so the correct film quantity and type can be brought to the gym.

One of the gymnasts you photographed has become somewhat famous in the sport and needs either publicity photos or photos to autograph for fans. Can I order bulk photos at a reduced price?

If you purchased a D or E package you are on your own. For A, B and/or C packages, you can order bulk photos from me. See the bulk photos page.

If I order a D or E package, where can the film I received be processed?

If you purchase any D or E package, or any package where you are given the exposed film, almost any local film lab can process this film. I do, however, recommend a professional lab. The professional lab will do "touchless" processing which prevents negatives from being scratched. Moreover their enlargements are usually processed with more care and on more quality paper. However, local labs do often get similar results. Note that the film requires no special processing.

Who owns the rights and what about duplication?

If you purchase any A, B or C package or any packages where you don't receive the exposed film, as pertains to the proofs and/or purchased photos, and any parts thereof, you may NOT:

  • Duplicate them in any way.
  • Scan them
  • Re-photograph them
  • Publish them
  • Distribute them for publication
  • Display them
  • Impose a charge for viewing them

Should you need to do any of the above, please contact me.

If you purchase any A, B, or C package, or any packages where you don't receive the exposed film, as pertains to the proofs and/or purchased photos you MAY:

  • Re-sell the photos
  • Display the photos
  • Distribute the photos for display

Should you purchase any D or E package, or any package where you receive the exposed film for processing, you may do what you wish with the photos, negatives, or any part thereof. I would of course appreciate (but not demand) photo credit should the photos be published in a periodical, on the Internet, or displayed in public view.

  • If I order photos, how can I re-order?

Each time you place an order you receive a new order sheet.

What if I want something different than the above packages?

Customized packages can be arranged, but must be arranged in advance

    How do I get started?

Figure how many athletes and what packages pertain to each, and then contact me as to dates/times/locations. Any deposits required will depend on various factors including number of athletes, geography, packages desired, etc. Details will be worked out via contact.

Will you shoot small quantities or even one gymnast?

Yes. Contact me with your situation.

Can you be hired to shoot athletes at meets?

Yes. I can be hired to shoot specific athletes, teams, or entire meets by athletes, parents, agents, gyms, periodicals, etc. Contact me for details.

Will you shoot film that I provide?

No. I'm sorry, but I must be in control of my film to be responsible for the quality of the finished product.

    Will you shoot slides (transparencies/chromes)?

If you purchase any D or E package I will shoot these upon request for a small additional fee per gymnast. Contact me in advance.

Why do you say 8-10 and 18-20 photos instead of just a set number?

Due to various things like misfiring of photographic strobes and gymnasts blinking their eyes, all the photos will not be desirable. In most cases you will get the highest number of photos to pick from, but in some cases this may be lowered due to these mishaps. I set the lower number as the least number of photo exposures you will receive.

I have more than one child in this gym. Can I shoot group photos or combine more than one gymnast into a package?

The main reason I've made a large number of photos in the D and E packages is to give you a wide variety of photos to pick from with different poses and different shots of each pose for each gymnast. Combining gymnasts into packages is a compromise of quality. Therefore, the answer I will give is yes and no. Yes I will allow multiple gymnasts into D or E packages provided those gymnasts have had a package purchased for them. Hence, you can purchase a B package for child one and a C package for child two, and the second half of the C package can be both children. However, No, I will not combine several children's single photos into one package. There may be instances where I will allow a second child (usually a toddler) into a package without the purchase of a package for that toddler. Please make sure you and/or your gym makes these arrangements in advance.
